General Liability vs. Professional Liability

The difference between general liability and professional liability — and why many California businesses need both.

What each one covers

General liability covers third-party bodily injury and property damage — a customer slipping, or damage you cause to someone else's property. Professional liability (also called errors and omissions) covers claims that a professional service you provided, or failed to provide, caused a client financial loss. They address different kinds of harm.

Why the difference matters

A general liability policy will not pay for a professional error that costs a client money, and a professional liability policy will not pay for a customer's injury on your premises. Many service businesses carry both because their exposure spans both.

How to think about which you need

If clients visit your premises or you work on their property, general liability is foundational. If your work involves advice, design, or professional services that could cause a client financial loss, professional liability is the core. Consultants, designers, and technology providers often need both.
